DEVUP Code for Visual Studio Code
DEVUP Code is the DEVUP AI extension for Visual Studio Code, installed from the Visual Studio Marketplace. It adds a DEVUP AI panel where you ask about your code, and you sign in from your browser without copying an API key.
Install
Install DEVUP Code in VS Code
VS Code gets DEVUP Code from the Visual Studio Marketplace. These steps use the Extensions view:
- Open VS Code.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+X to open the Extensions view.
- Search DEVUP AI.
- Click Install on DEVUP AI — AI code assistant.
DEVUP Code is this site's name for the extension. In the Extensions view, search "DEVUP AI". The listing reads "DEVUP AI — AI code assistant", and the panel is titled "DEVUP AI".
Account
Sign in to DEVUP AI from VS Code
- Open the DEVUP AI panel in the activity bar and choose Sign in with DEVUP.
- On devupai.com, click Allow access.
- VS Code then signs you in, with no API key to copy.
Prefer a key? You can paste a DEVUP API key in its place; that is how remote and web windows sign in.
Your sign-in goes into VS Code's secure storage on this device. It is not written to your settings or files. To sign out, open Account in DEVUP AI Settings, or run DEVUP AI: Sign Out.
Find it
Where the DEVUP AI panel and shortcut are
- DEVUP AI opens in its own panel in the VS Code activity bar.
- The editor title bar has a DEVUP AI button that opens the chat too. If you do not need it, hide it in Settings.
- Press
Ctrl+Alt+Dto bring selected code into the chat, or to open the message box.
In practice
How it works in practice: repair a function in VS Code
Say average() returns the wrong number and the unit test that checks it does not pass. Here is the whole round trip, from selecting the code to keeping the corrected version.
// stats.js in a sample project: the function you select first
export function average(values) {
let sum = 0;
for (let i = 1; i < values.length; i++) {
sum += values[i];
}
return sum / values.length;
}- Select the function and press
Ctrl+Alt+D. The lines join the chat as a chip above the message box, and nothing leaves VS Code until you send your question. - Type @ followed by the start of the test file's name and pick it, so the model reads the expectation next to the code.
- Glance at the gauge for a rough idea of how much of the model's context this message takes, and switch models in the picker if you want another one.
- Describe the symptom and press Enter. The answer streams into the panel; Esc stops it if it heads somewhere you did not ask for.
- On the code block that holds the correction, click Apply. With
devupai.editor.applyDiffleft at its default, the diff opens beside your file. - Check the diff, then choose Accept, or run
DEVUP AI: Accept Changefrom the Command Palette. The file is untouched before that, and Undo takes the edit back afterwards. - Run the test again. Still not passing? Edit your message and resend it, or regenerate the last reply.
The docs cover each of these moves in depth: editor actions and Apply and files and context.
Use cases
What developers do with DEVUP AI in VS Code
Get up to speed on unfamiliar code
Joined a project halfway through? Select the function you keep tripping over, right-click, open DEVUP AI and pick Explain. Your follow-up questions go to the same panel.
Clear an error from Quick Fix
When VS Code underlines an error or a warning, open Quick Fix right there and choose Fix with DEVUP AI. The chat receives that code along with the problems reported for it.
Drop a snippet where your cursor is
Asked for a small helper or a regular expression? Insert places the reply's code at your cursor, or over your selection, in a single edit that Undo reverses.
Find the right file in a large repository
Type @ and part of a file name to attach it. The search skips files your project excludes, .gitignore entries included, so a build folder listed there does not crowd the results.
Restricted Mode
DEVUP AI in a trusted folder and in Restricted Mode
Opening a repository you have not reviewed yet? Here is what DEVUP AI does when the folder is in Restricted Mode, next to a trusted one.
| What DEVUP AI does | Trusted folder | Restricted Mode |
|---|---|---|
| Chat about your code in the panel | Yes | Yes |
| Read the files and selections you attach | Yes | Yes |
| Write code into your files with Insert or Apply | Yes: Insert on your click, Apply once you accept the diff | No |
Read AGENTS.md and .devupai/rules.md | Yes, unless you switch a file off | No |
If something behaves differently from what you expect, troubleshooting walks through Restricted Mode and other common cases.
Tips
Small habits that help in VS Code
- Crowded title bar? Turn off
devupai.editor.titleButton. The activity-bar panel andCtrl+Alt+Dstill open the chat. - Start a long answer and move on to other work: if it finishes while VS Code is in the background, a notification brings you back to it.
- The editor actions guide walks through each right-click action and the Quick Fix entry in VS Code.

DEVUP AI and the AI chat built into VS Code
DEVUP AI works from a panel of its own. It does not replace the AI chat that comes built into VS Code.
Options
Ways to use DEVUP AI in VS Code
Here is what each setup gives you.
The DEVUP Code extension
Install it from the Visual Studio Marketplace and sign in from your browser. You chat in a DEVUP AI panel of its own, use right-click actions on selected code, and see changes as a diff before anything is written.
GitHub Copilot Chat with a custom endpoint
Add DEVUP AI models to GitHub Copilot Chat through the Custom Endpoint built into VS Code, with your DEVUP AI API key and no extension to install. See the VS Code integration guide for the steps.

Questions and answers
Yes, installing it is free. The requests you send are paid from your DEVUP balance.
DEVUP Code requires VS Code 1.96 or later.
Yes. Remote and web windows sign in with a DEVUP API key that you paste, in place of the browser sign-in.
No. DEVUP AI has a separate panel and is not a replacement for VS Code's built-in AI chat.
Yes. Click Apply on the code block and the change opens as a diff; your file stays as it is until you choose Accept. Reject throws the proposal away, and Undo reverses one you accepted.
On this computer. Open History in the panel to search them, pin or rename one, delete what you no longer need, or reopen a chat and carry on.
Partly. You can still chat, and DEVUP AI reads what you attach, but it does not write to your files and does not read project rules there.
